In nearby suburbia, eleven year old Olly Ryan discovers he is not alone, Olly shares his garden with a diminutive figure called Harold, living in a cellar beneath his compost heap. Harold is one of a community of ancestors secretly living in the derelict stately home of Borough Court… Harold is a maverick figure within the movement, relocating himself outside the community . Meeting Olly accidentally, along with friends Zak and Muriel they enter an association, separated by gulfs in age and values.
However discovering Ollie’s prowess in archery, Harold reveals a dark secret... his ancestors face terrible danger... their yew tree, a tree of life whose magical leaves have properties of immortality, faces attack from a super-monster known as Mohrlog. Bigger than a dinosaur, Mohrlog is so large, nothing in the ancestor's armoury can touch him, Mohrlog is devouring the yews, trying to steal the knowledge of the trees, believing the future belongs to him, leaving the ancestors to face famine and extinction.
A riddle prophesising that in a time of need, a boy comes to their aid hangs in Harold’s cellar. Written by the all-knowing Algenon the Alchemist, Harold identifies Olly as the boy in the riddle… bringing Olly Ryan to Borough Court to meet Algenon.
Algenon knows about Olly having viewed him within his crystal orb, erudite, well travelled and altruistic, Algenon never lost his belief in nor his love for man kind, keeping in touch with the world outside seeing analogies between the problems ancestors face with Mohrlog, and those mankind faces with climate change.
A suite of alchemical symbols sketched upon parchments in his study plot an ominous processional trajectory towards man's ultimate violent destruction…
Algenon believes it remains his duty to influence mankind’s destiny. Altruism underpins Algenon's alchemy, making Olly and his friends associates for the period of their tribulation, trusting Olly would make good choices and learn lessons regarding choice and destiny…
Olly Ryan embarks upon a fantastic adventure, for Algenon understands an adventure speaks a thousand words. Olly receives his bow and arrow, a blade of honour, bravely skirmishing with the monster. Boasting to Olly that gluttony is the source of his greatness, Olly appreciates greed is Mohrlog’s defining characteristic, but could also be his undoing... After a plan in which beer baits a trap to snare Mohrlog within a noose of his own greed, there follows a final titanic showdown in which Mohrlog is defeated.
Algenon reminds them they are not alone, their ancestors remain undimmed in their love and his desire to guide man… Reminding them of the role that choice played in bringing this about and that through making good choices, there will be no apocalypse, no end of the world, good choices will ensure a golden age is just around the corner.
The adventure has just been another alchemical experiment in which through the furnace of fire, lesser impurities all melt away to reveal the true metal, the gold of their real selves.

This book can be read on many levels. Its an adventure story with an unlikely hero.Olly with his two friends Zak and Muriel form an alliance with the Composters to bring about the downfall of the giant slug like monster that feeds off landfill.There is plenty of humour, loyalty and courage. There are unforgetable images of Mohrlog oozing thick green sludge, with lice the size of sausages, breath so bad people faint if near it....
On another level it is a very timely book about greed and the environment and the choices we have to make before its too late.
On a deeper level there is the mysterious figure of Algenon the alchemist and the mysteries of transformation.
A good read for children from 10yrs and up and for adults too.
