It’s summer vacation. Lanta Cross is sixteen and at odds with Bernadette, her adoptive mother. She’ll do anything to get away from home and out from under Bernadette’s considerable thumb.

Already working one part-time job at a local café, Lanta takes another at Saint Catherine’s Elder Care Facility. At first it appears her duties are something she can do blindfolded -- wheeling residents to and from activities, cleaning up their messes, and mainly staying out of the way of the LVNs and the administrator, Ms. Andrews. During her first week at the home, Lanta meets and befriends an elderly lesbian resident, Gertrude Weiss. They bond quickly.

Yet not everything is what it seems at St. Catherine’s.

When Gertrude’s journal full of her thoughts about her late partner goes missing, the abuse begins. Gertrude’s meals are late and cold. Her seemingly friendly roommate asks for a transfer to another room. As the harassment escalates, Gertrude’s physical and emotional health deteriorates.

Lanta and her mother must pool their resources and work as a team to save Gertrude’s life before it’s too late. Will they be in time?

Getting Gertie Out edition by Paul Alan Fahey Literature Fiction eBooks

Lanta, the protagonist, feels alienated from her stepmom. Through her first job at a care facility for the elderly, Lanta gains a sense of independence as well as a first solid friendship with an adult. Both her work and her new-found friendship work as catalysts in finding her "mom" at last, and it turns out that Gertie and Lanta's mom have something in common as well. I liked the gay theme, it was casual and central at the same time. Being lesbian was merely a form of being outside the accepted norm - the book wasn't about being lesbian per se, it was about being tolerant and accepting and embracing true friendships: good lessons to learn on Atlanta's road from teenager to adult. I love the story and the characters. Although one of the themes of the book deals with elder abuse, the story didn't get too creepy or horrible. As the title suggests, Gertie got out just in time.

Getting Gertie Out edition by Paul Alan Fahey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Just finished 'Gertie', and I thought it was a terrific, gently-told piece. Do you plan to continue with these characters? I like the threesome very much. I was surprised at Gertie's age, but thought you dealt with that quite well in the story. I wasn't a fan of the mother-daughter drinking wine (but that's just a thing with me..) It's interesting how characters develop during a story, and I thought you did a huge amount within a short space. At first, I thought Lanta sounded younger than 17, but changed my mind during the story. I LOVED the mother-daughter conflict-resolution and thought that was really the most compelling part of the story. But, there are a lot of cross-stories (Gertie-Lanta being another mother/daughter-ish relationship that was a nice contrast with the Lanta-Mom relationship because it didn't have all the backstory) and, as I said, I really liked the three together. You are so prolific. I am in awe.
The story of Gertie, a lesbian senior who is bullied and abused in a nursing home, is told in a gentle, charming way that makes an enjoyable read. It brings to our attention a subject many people (myself included) were unaware of.

The novella is told mostly from the point of view of a teenaged girl, Lanta, who works in a care home as a part-time summer job. Although the book sheds light on abuse, it's not strident or angry. It is more of a fable that shows how Lanta and her adoptive mother heal their own relationship by rescuing Gertrude and welcoming her into their hearts. I was surprised to discover close to the end of the story that Gertie was only in her mid-sixties. She seemed older. But this may be because the story is told from the point of view of a teenager, to whom everybody over 40 probably seems doddery.

As always, Mr. Fahey delivers a well-written, concise story full of heartfelt emotion and real empathy.

I received a copy of the book from the author with no obligation to write a review.
