Read the book readers are comparing to Harry Potter, Throne of Glass, and Anne Bishop's Others Series!

A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she's just like all the other magi.

A dragon who sees through her lies.

Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.

Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she's got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can't afford at her part time job in a café, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.

The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.

As an illusionist, she doesn't have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduates—and legendary treasure hoards are an added bonus—she thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems...

Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight.

"It was an interesting mix of Harry Potter meets Lost Girl, meets Dresden – and it worked."

"Magic, dragons, romantic tension. What more could you ask for? I am a sucker for most fantasy but it's been a long time since I found I book I couldn't put down and I could not put this book down!"

"Part of having a successful book or series that deals with magic or fantastical things is creating a believable world, and the author did just that. There are the obvious things like whether magical creatures are out in the open or hidden, and who the different beings are (from vampire to dragons to your average magical human), but the book went beyond those details and dealt with discrimination, slavery, powerful leaders that could misuse their influence, and the taboo-ness of magical and non-magical co-mingling. This was a well developed world and I loved to soak in all the details of it."

"I love the writing style. I love the plot line, I love the surprises. Yeah I just loved this one."

"This was a strong start to a new series. I think that fans of the Other books, Kim Harrison The Hollows series, Kelly Armstrong Otherword series, and Jeanne Stein's Anna Strong Vampire series will enjoy this book."

Smoke and Mirrors Blackhollow Academy Book 1 eBook Jess Haines

This book is ok. I feel like it is pretty standard fare for an urban fantasy, and a little overpriced which is why i gave it 3 stars. There weren't a lot of editing errors which was nice and the idea of the book was good. I just feel like the execution could have gone a little better with the story developed more beyond the standard urban fantasy romance. This book is set within Jess Haine's larger universe where the "Others" (read all manner of supernatural creatures) have come out to humanity and now live among us. The protagonist of the tale is a strange magic user who is a sorcerer. A breed of magic user which apparently has been hunted almost to extinction. Having never read any of Mz. Haines other books I didn't know what the difference between a sorcerer and the rest of the magi was and why they were being hunted, and didn't until almost 2/3's of the way through the book when matters were explained a little more thoroughly even though the main characters (MC) sorcerourness was revealed in the first few pages. The rest of the universe was largely explained very well and so this gap of information was a little frustrating as I read through the novel all the while wondering why it was so bad for the MC to be one. Besides this one point the rest of the book was pretty good. Had magic, had romance, just wish it had a little more story.

Smoke and Mirrors Blackhollow Academy Book 1 eBook Jess Haines Reviews

Kimberly is a half-blood sorcerer trying to survive in a school for Magi. She doesn't know how to do even basic elemental spells but is a whiz at illusions. Kimberly's Professor James has taken a strong interest in her success, suggested that Kimberly find a dragon to be a familiar, and recommended that she turn to a person called Cormac Hunter to do so. Poor Kimberly is literally very poor, working many hours at a coffee shop to bring home a little money to pay for the rent of the apartment that she shares with her mother. She goes after work to meet Cormac, who turns out to a sexy but mysterious and incredibly powerful something, not a Magi, not a faery, something she has never encountered. He is sort of crotchety but is quite surprised by Kimberly and her honesty, as well as her amazing illusions. He agrees to find a dragon for her.

The story is really quite engrossing. I was captured within the first chapter and found it hard to put the kindle down. Surprise after surprising kept coming up on each page. The setting of the book is New York City, next to Central Park. It is not a idealistic New York City. It is a New York City with many "Others" who lived there, including vampires, miniature, nymphs, sprites, dragons, and others... The places and their descriptions in the City are described with an eye for tactile and visual detail, as are the creatures that populate the landscape. There was much to be afraid of, many dangerous characters in the City, including Cormac.

The Blackhollow Academy is situated in special place in New York City, at the Museum of Natural History, through a magic portal on 81st street. It is the perfect place to have an academy to train magi. A lot of the action takes place in Central Park at Sheep Meadows and some at the Pine Barrens in New Jersey. The author has a vivid imagination of dragons and other supernatural creatures. Finally, Kimberly is a very likable character. I am looking forward to the next book.
Started strong, then devolved into a generic romance novel with particularly dense and juvenile characters.Story could be generated by a computer program for generic romance novel. Many author induced contrived situations.

There was the core of a strong story here. Kimberly, the heroine, and her situation, are presented in a very good manner that draws in the reader, but something happened and the author decided to write a completely generic romance fantasy novel to wrap the story up. I had to put the book away a couple of times because it got to be so stupid.

Warning!!! Spoilers! Plot Plucky girl meets strong ancient male character, both act like 12 year old hormone driven gits, author induced stupidity that she can't see what he is, and she has a completely disproportionate meltdown when the obvious is realized. Then "I hate you", "but I love you", " Oh, OK, then". Heroine arbitrarily gains and loses ability to do stuff. And my favorite Let's not tell the heroine anything to help her.

Much telegraphing of punches" Hope my mom is not targeted", "Do not have anything to with the bad guy, especially by yourself","Well... let's let the bad guy go, what can go wrong?", and so on.

I think the author has promise, but please try harder to break the mold. Make your smart people smart, do not rely on fortuitous circumstance to save the protagonist, do not telegraph the plot, try to come up with unique solutions to plot twists.
